What Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin III - Dawn of Rebellion Is About
Yoshikazu Yasuhiko's 2016 Japanese animation is the third part of The Origin, the series telling the beginning of the Gundam universe. Édouard Mass conceals his identity and enters the Zeon military academy as Char Aznable; the friendship he forms there is part of his plan to avenge his family. The series is interested not in battle but in politics: how a republic turns into a dynasty, propaganda and assassination. Yasuhiko was the character designer on the original Gundam series and the drawing here is his. Its limit is having no conclusion of its own because of the episodic structure, and weighing heavily on anyone who does not know the universe. Who it's for: viewers who follow the Gundam series and like politically constructed science fiction anime. Who it's not for: anyone new to the series, or wanting a story built to stand alone.
