What Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin V: Clash at Loum Is About
Yoshikazu Yasuhiko's 2017 anime covers the large space battle at the starting point of the Gundam series. The Principality of Zeon advances after its colony drop; the Earth Federation Forces answer with a numerically superior fleet, and the two sides clash at Loum. This installment shows how Char Aznable became a legend. The name Red Comet is earned in this battle, and the scale of the event is closer to a military tableau than a personal story. Yasuhiko was the character designer on the original series and here directs his own manga. The animation combines hand drawing with computer-assisted mecha movement; the battle sequences are among the densest in the series. Who it's for: viewers following the Gundam universe. Who it's not for: viewers new to the series; the film assumes knowledge of earlier installments and does not stand alone.
