What No One Writes to the Colonel Is About
A retired colonel puts on his only suit every Friday and goes down to the dock to wait for the letter announcing that his pension has come through. He has been waiting for years. Everyone in the town knows the letter will not come; his wife knows, and he knows too. There is no food in the house, and the only thing left to sell is the fighting cock his son left behind. His son was killed years ago. Arturo Ripstein directed the film from Gabriel García Márquez's short novel, with a screenplay by Paz Alicia Garciadiego. It is a co-production between France, Spain and Mexico. Fernando Luján plays the colonel, Marisa Paredes his wife and Salma Hayek a woman from the town. The film competed at Cannes in 1999 and was Mexico's Oscar submission. Waiting here is a matter of dignity.
