Oh! Baby

B. V. Nandini Reddy's 2019 Telugu film is a remake of the Korean Miss Granny. Baby Naidu, seventy years old, returns to the body of her twenty-four-year-old self after having her photograph taken at a studio; her mind and habits stay where they were, and she tries again at the singing she had to give up in her youth. While using the comedy of the premise, the film gives its real attention to the invisibility of an old woman: the same person, the same ideas, an entirely different response. Samantha Ruth Prabhu carries the trick of inhabiting an old woman without overplaying it, and Lakshmi's brief appearances hold the balance. The story is long and reaches for emotional shortcuts in the final section. Who it's for: viewers who like mainstream Telugu comedy and body-swap premises. Who it's not for: anyone who has seen the original, or who finds narratives past two and a half hours wearing.
