Mark Robson's 1954 American comedy follows a couple whose eight-year marriage has ended as they each try to start dating again. After the divorce Robert and Nina plan to enjoy their freedom, but they run into each other everywhere they go and cannot stop making comparisons. George Axelrod's screenplay treats divorce not as a disaster but as a test of social skill. The rapport between Judy Holliday and Jack Lemmon carries the film, and Lemmon at the very start of his career is worth seeing. Kim Novak's short role stands out. The ending gives in to the moral expectation of the period, which weakens the sharpness of the opening. Who it's for: viewers who like classic Hollywood comedy and Jack Lemmon's early work. Who it's not for: anyone hoping for a surprise in the outcome, or troubled by the gender conventions of the period.
