What Private Lives Is About
Amanda and Elyot were once married, then divorced, and both have married again: Elyot to Sibyl and Amanda to Victor. They arrive at the same hotel for their honeymoons on the same day and are put in rooms with adjoining terraces, and everything is fine until Amanda catches sight of Elyot on the terrace next door. Sidney Franklin’s eighty four minute American film was adapted from Noël Coward’s 1930 play, with a screenplay by Hanns Kräly and Richard Schayer. Norma Shearer plays Amanda, Robert Montgomery plays Elyot, Reginald Denny plays Victor and Una Merkel plays Sibyl. It opened on 12 December 1931, and Coward said he liked what the two leads had done.
