What The Barretts of Wimpole Street Is About
The poet Elizabeth Barrett is slowly recovering from a long illness, helped by her siblings and above all by her youngest sister Henrietta. But the real problem in the house is not the illness, it is the suffocating rule of her widowed father. When she meets the poet Robert Browning, the possibility of making a decision of her own appears for the first time in her life, and her father has no intention of letting her out of his sight. Sidney Franklin adapted a stage play. Norma Shearer plays Elizabeth, and Charles Laughton keeps the father quiet, which is exactly what makes him frightening.
