What Smilin' Through Is About

Sidney Franklin's 1932 melodrama follows Sir John Carteret, whose fiancée Moonyeen is shot dead by a jealous rival on their wedding day. He spends three decades in seclusion, talking mostly to the memory of the woman he lost. When Moonyeen's niece Kathleen is orphaned, he takes her in and raises her. Years later the girl falls in love with the son of the man who fired that shot, and what Carteret believed he had buried comes back. Norma Shearer plays both Moonyeen and Kathleen, opposite Fredric March and Leslie Howard. The story, taken from a stage play, has been filmed several times; this is the pre-Code version.
