Quality Street

Phoebe Throssel is young and beautiful. Before the Napoleonic wars begin, Doctor Valentine Brown takes an interest in her. He enlists, though, and goes off to the war. Phoebe waits for him. Something close to ten years goes by. When he returns he finds her changed. She is no longer the woman he remembers. He lets it show, and Phoebe’s pride is wounded. So she sets up a game. She presents herself as her own niece. She becomes someone called Livvy, newly arrived from London. This young and lively woman catches Brown’s interest. He invites her to the ball. Phoebe means to lead him on and then tell him the truth to his face. The film is adapted from the play by J. M. Barrie. Marion Davies and Conrad Nagel appear in the hundred and ten minute film, an American production Sidney Franklin finished in 1927.
