What The Dark Angel Is About
Kitty, Alan and Gerald have been inseparable since childhood, and Kitty, who always knew she would marry one of them, settles on Alan as the war begins. Once the two men are at the front, Gerald convinces himself that Alan has betrayed her, Alan will not stoop to correcting him, and a friendship comes apart on a single misunderstanding. Lillian Hellman and Mordaunt Shairp wrote the script from Guy Bolton’s 1925 play, with Samuel Goldwyn producing. Merle Oberon campaigned hard for the part and got the only Academy Award nomination of her career out of it. The picture did well enough that Goldwyn went on to remake two more of his own earlier hits.
