Scoop!

Shizuka is a paparazzo in middle age. He knows his trade, but gambling has left him in debt. He once worked at a weekly magazine called Scoop! and landed one big story after another; now he freelances and chases celebrity scandal. The magazine assigns him a rookie reporter, Nobi, to work alongside him. Hitoshi One's Japanese film is adapted from a work written and directed by Masato Harada in 1985. Masaharu Fukuyama and Fumi Nikaido take the leads. The telling neither clears tabloid journalism nor condemns it outright; it shows both the addictive side of the work and the harm it does. The tone starts out like comedy and hardens as it goes.
