What Season of the Devil Is About
The Philippines at the end of the seventies, under martial law. A militia under military control keeps a remote village in fear and spreads that fear by violence and by rumour alike. Lorena, a young doctor, opens a clinic for the poor and one day disappears without a trace. Her husband, a poet and a dissident, sets out to find her. Every line of the film is sung; the music here is not ornament but the account itself. It runs close to four hours and shows the repression not as an event but as a condition that does not end. Piolo Pascual plays the lead in Lav Diaz’s two hundred and thirty two minute Filipino film, completed in 2018.
