What Sex in Chains Is About
A young man is convicted of manslaughter and goes to prison. There a close relationship forms between him and his cellmate. Confinement, loneliness and time are what shape it. When the man is released and comes home, his wife finds him changed. She tries to understand what the prison did to the man she married. The film presents the relationship in prison neither as a crime nor as something ridiculous. It is one of the few German films of 1928 to look at the subject directly. The hundred and seven minutes are about a single homecoming. William Dieterle both directed and played the lead, with Mary Johnson and Gunnar Tolnæs also in the cast, in the German film completed in 1928.
