What The Case Is Closed, Forget It Is About
Vanzi is a successful architect, arrested one night on a claim that he hit someone with his car. He thinks he is innocent and believes he will be out in a few hours. He is not. Waiting in the remand prison he starts to see the arrangement inside: the guards have been bought, the wings are run by the mafia, and who gets out and when is decided not by the court but by that arrangement. When Vanzi tries to speak about it his situation only gets worse. Damiano Damiani was among the best known names in a strand of Italian cinema in the seventies that went straight at institutions; he made film after film about the mafia, the judiciary and the police. This is one of them, and its subject is not the prison but the prison running on the same rules as the outside. Franco Nero has the lead and does not make the character a hero; the man is simply afraid. A hundred and six minutes. The ending brings no resolution, and the title says as much already.
