What Goodbye & Amen Is About
An American intelligence officer stationed in Rome, while preparing for the overthrow of a government in an African country, learns that one of his own men has been in contact with the other side. He never gets the chance to confront him, because the man opens fire in a hotel, shoots several people and then takes a couple hostage in a room. What follows is a reckoning going on outside squeezed into one room inside. The film comes from the political thriller widespread in Italy in the seventies and does not present intelligence work as heroism. The account asks whether the real crime is committed inside or outside. Tony Musante and Claudia Cardinale appear in Damiano Damiani’s hundred and eight minute Italian film, completed in 1977.
