What The Most Beautiful Wife Is About
A sixteen-year-old girl in Sicily refuses the marriage that has been arranged for her. This is not simply a matter between her and her family, because the other party is the mafia, and a girl saying no is not something the arrangement allows for. The more firmly she holds her position, the heavier the pressure becomes. Damiano Damiani's film is drawn from the real story of Franca Viola, who in 1965 became the first woman in Italy to refuse to marry the man who had abducted her, rejecting the so-called reparative marriage and changing the national argument about it. Ornella Muti, playing the girl, was fourteen. It was her first film.
