What The Damned Is About
April 1945. Germany is collapsing. In Oslo a group of Nazis and collaborators board a submarine bound for South America to put themselves beyond justice. Among them are officers, a journalist, an industrialist and their families. When one of them takes a turn for the worse they abduct a doctor from the coast: Guilbert, held aboard against his will. As the submarine goes on the air inside it changes; everyone starts suspecting everyone else and looking for their own way out. René Clément made the film two years after the war. Almost all of it takes place inside the submarine. It was awarded at Cannes and is among the harshest of Clément's early work.
