What The Paper Man Is About
Adan is a mute waste picker who lives by collecting and selling cardboard in Mexico City. One day he finds a ten thousand peso note in the rubbish, and from that moment everyone around him is looking for a way to it. He cannot read, but he can look a person in the eye and tell whether he is being lied to. Ismael Rodriguez made the 1963 film from Luis Spota's book El billete, and Gabriel Figueroa shot it in black and white. Ignacio Lopez Tarso was honoured for the performance at the San Francisco and Cork festivals. It was Mexico's foreign film submission to the thirty sixth Academy Awards. Its subject is not money but what people do to someone thought to have it.
