Dos tipos de cuidado

Jorge and Pedro have been friends since childhood. Both like playing with women and everyone in town knows it. Then they fall out. Pedro marries the woman Jorge loves. Jorge counts it betrayal and gets engaged to Pedro's sister in revenge. When the two meet they throw lines at each other in song. Nobody says plainly what happened. There is a reason hidden behind it, and when the reason comes out all the anger changes place. Ismael Rodríguez directs. Jorge Negrete plays Jorge and Pedro Infante plays Pedro; Carmelita González and Yolanda Varela are in the cast. It is a Mexican production, made in 1953. Negrete and Infante were the two great stars of Mexican cinema and played together only in this film; Negrete died the same year. Its best known section is the scene in which the two men sing at each other; the words are insults and the scene is built as though in a single take. The narrative belongs to the ranchera tradition; the songs are a continuation of speech inside it. The matter it treats is male pride; both characters carry something they misunderstood for years. The film was among the most watched productions of Mexican cinema's golden age and is still shown on television. The women's parts do not make the decisions of the narrative and it carries the outlook of its period. Its limit is age; the humour belongs to its time, the conflict is contrived, and the narrative resolves too easily at the end. Who it is for: viewers who like the golden age of Mexican cinema and musical comedy. Who it is not for: it is old, conventional, and the ending too tidy.
