What The Pied Piper Is About

The Englishman Mr Howard is on a fishing trip in the east of France in 1940 when the Germans invade. He sets out to get home, but is persuaded to take two children with him, and as the journey goes on the number of children in tow keeps growing. When they reach the occupied north a new danger appears: being overheard speaking English. The film tells the war not from the front but from the side of an old man trying to get a crowd of children across a border. It was made during the war years and carries the tone of that period. Monty Woolley plays the lead in Irving Pichel’s eighty seven minute American film, completed in 1942.
