What The Moon Is Down Is About
The film is about a small town in Norway resisting the German occupation. It was adapted from the novel of the same name by John Steinbeck. The relation between the soldiers billeted in the town and the people stands at the centre of the account. That the occupier is also uneasy in the situation is the unusual side of the account. How the resistance begins and how it spreads is shown step by step. Shot in 1943 while the war was going on, the film openly takes a side. The smallness of the town makes the resistance something that happens where everyone knows everyone. Cedric Hardwicke and Lee J. Cobb appear in Irving Pichel’s ninety minute American film, completed in 1943.
