Tomorrow Is Forever

1918. Elizabeth is told that her husband John has been killed at the front. She is pregnant, bears his son alone, and in time marries her employer, Larry. John is not dead. His face and body were destroyed, he left his identity behind, and he stayed in Europe. Years later, as the second war is starting, an Austrian chemist named Kessler arrives in America and begins coming and going from Elizabeth's house. The boy wants to enlist, his mother refuses, and Kessler ends up inside that argument. Irving Pichel directs the American film; a hundred and five minutes, with Claudette Colbert as Elizabeth and Orson Welles as Kessler. In one of the small parts is Natalie Wood at six, in one of her earliest films. Welles at this point could not raise money for his own projects and was acting in other people's.
