What The Man I Married Is About
Carol, an American, travels to Germany in the summer of 1938 with her German husband Eric and their son; it is to be a short visit. But the moment he sets foot in the country the husband begins to change: he goes to rallies, takes up the language of the new regime and laughs off his wife’s objections. Carol, meanwhile, tries to make sense of what she sees, of what the papers do not print and of people she knows suddenly vanishing. When she wants to leave, the question is whether she can take her child back. Irving Pichel’s seventy seven minute American film was made before the country entered the war; Joan Bennett and Francis Lederer appear. It was completed in 1940.
