The film begins with Andrew Jackson’s youth and follows his meeting with and marriage to Rachel Donelson Robards. Rachel married Jackson before she was legally separated from her first husband; when that detail comes out years later the validity of the marriage becomes a matter of argument and his opponents turn it into a political weapon. The couple have to deal with the accusation, the gossip and the public gaze, and the account puts at its centre not Jackson’s career but the cost of that marriage. In Henry Levin’s ninety six minute American film, Susan Hayward plays Rachel and Charlton Heston plays Jackson; it was adapted from a novel by Irving Stone. It was completed in 1953.
