What Too Hot to Handle Is About
The newsreel cameraman Chris Hunter is in Shanghai covering the war between China and Japan when he meets the pilot Alma Harding. She does not trust him, and he takes her on as his assistant anyway. The two then set out for the Amazon to look for her missing brother, and her opinion of him slowly shifts. The most striking thing about the film now is how it sees the trade: Hunter and his rival Bill Dennis compete for exclusive footage and, when they cannot shoot a thing, stage it and file it as news, so the film takes faked newsreel as an open subject. Jack Conway directed for MGM, with Clark Gable, Myrna Loy and Walter Pidgeon in the leads. It opened on 16 September 1938, was made for a million and a half dollars and took two million three hundred thousand.
