What Totò Looking for a House Is About
Beniamino and his family have been living inside a school building since the war ended. Five years on they are told to leave, and finding a flat in Rome is close to impossible. Every attempt runs them into another dead end, every apartment slips away through another trick. The subject is not a joke: the housing shortage in postwar Rome was real, and this film plays as farce what the neorealist films told in earnest, without losing the sting. Our record lists one director, but two people made it. Toto leads.
