What Yotsuya Ghost Story Part 1 Is About
Iemon Tamiya is a poor masterless samurai who wants a better life, and what he sees standing in his way is Oiwa, the wife who is completely devoted to him. The film comes from one of the most often performed ghost stories in Japanese theatre. Rather than turning it into a horror show, Keisuke Kinoshita moves it forward by showing how a man builds his own reckoning and what he does to his wife; what is frightening here is not the ghost but that reckoning. This is the first of a production in two parts. Kinuyo Tanaka appears in the eighty five minute Japanese film, completed in 1949.
