What A Day in Court Is About
One day in an Italian magistrate's court. Petty offences, petty lies and enormous quantities of talk pass in front of the bench: people who have been fighting, people denouncing their neighbours, people who tell a story instead of mounting a defence. Every case is its own scene and every defendant a type, and the courtroom turns into a cross-section of the country at that moment. Steno sends the great faces of Italian comedy to the stand one after another: Peppino De Filippo, Alberto Sordi, Silvana Pampanini. A very young Sophia Loren is also in the cast. The structure is simple, and the satire does the work of description.
