What A Hero in His Slippers Is About
A retired general lives a poor but honest life with his wife and daughter. One day his future son-in-law comes to say that he is emigrating to Australia; the same day his cousin Apostolos turns up with news of his own: the state has decided to honour the general and will put up his statue in the small square in front of his house. While the statue is being made there is neither food nor money in the house, and the distance between the family’s honour and its livelihood grows steadily more absurd. Alekos Sakellarios’s eighty five minute Greek film is set in the Athens of the fifties and puts poverty underneath its comedy. Vasilis Logothetidis takes the lead, with Ilia Livykou in the cast. It was completed in 1958.
