What The Coffee Reader Is About
Alekos Sakellarios’s 1956 Greek comedy is set in a poor neighbourhood of Athens. Next to Spyros’s coffee house is a place that has made a good deal of money reading fortunes in coffee cups, and whose owner is preparing to move up to wealthy Kolonaki. In the same streets is Kalliopi, a laundress who barely gets by. After an incident in which a customer humiliates her and Spyros steps in, he has an idea: let Kalliopi take over the vacated shop and read the cups herself. The film turns the promise of moving up a class into a joke at its own expense. Georgia Vasileiadou, one of the great Greek comic performers, plays Kalliopi, with Mimis Fotopoulos as Spyros.
