What Mrs. Midwife Is About
In a small Greek village a doctor who has retired and settled in his wife’s home place opens a practice. But the village already has a midwife; she works by lifting the evil eye and writing charms, and it is she the villagers trust. The rivalry between the two grows and the village splits in half. Meanwhile the midwife’s son, a medical student in Athens, comes home for the holidays and falls in love with the doctor’s daughter. The film gives the tension between modern medicine and the village’s own habits as comedy, and does not put either side entirely in the right. Georgia Vasileiadou appears in Alekos Sakellarios’s seventy seven minute Greek comedy, completed in 1961.
