What The Germans Strike Again Is About
Four years have passed since the end of the Nazi occupation and Greece is now in the middle of a war within itself. Theodoros, a quiet and modest man, is disgusted by what he sees and has lost his hope. He falls asleep and has a nightmare: Hitler is not dead and the Germans come back with more powerful weapons. The film builds that nightmare as a comedy, but the place the joke comes from is a fresh wound. That it was shot in 1948, while the civil war was still going on, sets the tone as well. The account puts the tiredness of an ordinary man at its centre. Vasilis Logothetidis, Nitsa Tsaganea and Ilia Livykou appear in Alekos Sakellarios’s ninety minute Greek film, completed in 1948.
