What A Japanese Tragedy Is About
Widowed as the war ends, a mother does everything she can to raise her two children; she works as a maid, goes without, lives as though entitled to nothing. But her son and daughter do not want to be known by the poverty of the house and pull away from her, going after a comfort she cannot give them. The more she gives the more alone she is left, and there is no end to her helplessness. Rather than reduce the matter to a story of ungrateful children, Keisuke Kinoshita shows what post war Japan forced on people. Yuko Mochizuki and Keiji Sada appear in the hundred and sixteen minute Japanese production, completed in 1953.
