What Battles Without Honor and Humanity: Police Tactics Is About
Kinji Fukasaku's 1974 film is the fourth part of the series about the yakuza of Hiroshima. Japan is preparing for the 1964 Olympics and how the country looks from outside has become a political matter; under pressure from the press and the public, the police launch a wide operation against the gangs. The film's subject is how that pressure changes the war between the families: as arrests multiply, loyalties dissolve, the upper ranks sacrifice the lower and who works for whom becomes unclear. Fukasaku keeps the style of the series, with handheld camera, sudden zooms, frozen frames and the name of each man who dies typed on screen. The account states that it rests on real events and never romanticises the yakuza. Who it's for: viewers who like Japanese crime cinema and are following the series. Who it's not for: anyone who has not seen the earlier films; there are many characters and no recap.
