What Bureau of Missing Persons Is About
Roy Del Ruth’s 1933 pre-Code film takes place inside the police unit of its title. Butch Saunders has been transferred to Missing Persons for being too brutal elsewhere, and finds an entirely different face of the work: runaway children, people who have lost their memories, people who chose to disappear, and the ones left behind. Bette Davis plays a woman who says she is looking for her husband and whose situation is considerably more tangled than that. The film switches between crime and comedy at speed and is a characteristic piece of Warner Bros. pacing from the period. Pat O’Brien plays Butch and Lewis Stone the man running the bureau.
