What Carbine Williams Is About
David Marshall Williams is sent to a prison farm, and while working in the tool shop there he develops the operating principle of the M1 Carbine that would be used in the Second World War. The short-stroke piston, invented by a man serving time for murder in North Carolina, gave him his nickname once the weapon went into production at Winchester and elsewhere. Directed by Richard Thorpe for MGM, the film has James Stewart as Williams, with Jean Hagen and Wendell Corey opposite him. Williams himself served as technical director, spent a stretch in Hollywood and then went home to Fayetteville. It came out in 1952 to generally favourable reviews.
