What Tarzan Escapes Is About
One instalment of MGM's Tarzan series with Johnny Weissmuller. Jane's cousins arrive in the jungle wanting her signature so she can claim an inheritance. The hunter with them, Captain Fry, has a different aim: to capture Tarzan and put him on display in a cage. The production ran into serious trouble, the first version was judged too dark and substantial parts were reshot, and what is watched today is that corrected cut. Its picture of Africa and of Africans carries the colonial view of its period, which is worth knowing going in.
