Malaya

The journalist John Royer, who has lived abroad for years, comes home just after America enters the war. When he boasts that smuggling rubber out of Malaya would be easy, the job is handed straight to him. He has Carnaghan, a man from his past, sprung from Alcatraz, and the two of them travel to South East Asia passing as Irishmen. There Carnaghan gathers his old associates, and with a few plantation owners they plan to move the rubber out under the eyes of the Japanese army. The rubber here is not a pretext for adventure but the raw material the war runs on. Spencer Tracy and James Stewart appear in Richard Thorpe’s ninety eight minute American film, completed in 1949.
