What The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Is About
Chafing under the rules of civilisation and against his scheming, self-serving father, Huckleberry Finn takes to the Mississippi on a raft. He travels with Jim, an escaped slave, and along the river meets confidence men, townspeople and his own conscience. Richard Thorpe’s MGM production adapts Mark Twain’s 1884 novel, with Mickey Rooney as Huck and Rex Ingram as Jim. The adaptation changes a great deal of the novel’s plot and softens its harshest passages about race, the studio having trimmed the text to avoid trouble at the time. As a result the film leaves out much of Twain’s humour and most of the book’s genuinely uncomfortable question. Rex Ingram’s Jim is still the part of it most often remembered.
