Carrington V.C.

Major Charles Carrington is arrested for taking a hundred and twenty-five pounds from the base safe and faces two further charges that could end a distinguished service career. He decides to conduct his own defence; his argument is that the army owes him a good deal for what his various postings have cost him out of his own pocket. What complicates matters is his claim that he told his superior, the widely disliked Colonel Henniker, that he was taking the money. As the hearing goes on it is not only a man’s career in the balance but his marriage and several people’s reputations. Anthony Asquith directed, from the play by Campbell and Dorothy Christie, with a screenplay by John Hunter. David Niven leads, with Margaret Leighton and Noelle Middleton. It opened on 9 December 1954 and was shown in the United States as Court Martial.
