Little François Lepic, whom his mother hates and calls Carrot Top by way of mockery, is the target of a systematic humiliation inside his own house; his brother and sister take their share of the arrangement, and his father, busy with the council elections, does not see what state his son is in. The boy’s despair reaches as far as the thought of taking his own life. Julien Duvivier’s hundred and eight minute silent film was adapted from the book by Jules Renard, with André Heuzé as François and Charlotte Barbier-Krauss and Henry Krauss as the parents. Duvivier remade it as a sound film in 1932 and said it was the work closest to his heart of everything he had done. The film was restored by Lobster Films with a new score by Gabriel Thibaudeau.
