What Champagne for Savages Is About
During the Second World War in France a company gathered for a birthday is suddenly trapped when German soldiers are killed outside the house. The Gestapo demands that, if the killer is not found, they themselves choose two from among their number to be handed over and shot; if no choice is made, all seven will be taken. At the table are a collaborator, a blind veteran, a physician, an educator and a patriotic young woman. The black comedy begins exactly there, because each of them uses everything at hand to save themselves. The film asks not who is moral but what is left of a person under pressure. Claude Rich appears in Christian-Jaque’s ninety nine minute French film, completed in 1964.
