Ciuleandra

After killing his wife, Puiu Faranga is helped by his father to feign insanity. The film does not build the murder as a puzzle; it tells of the family stepping in after the crime and of the attempt to save a man from punishment. The account presents him as neither mentally ill nor a cold blooded killer and does not explain his decision. The father’s position and influence are the real force in the story, and the difference of class enters directly into the working of the law. It was adapted from a book and its events take place in a narrow circle. When the pretence turns into the thing itself is left open. Stefan Iordache plays the lead in Sergiu Nicolaescu’s hundred and nineteen minute Romanian film, completed in 1985.
