For Motherland

The year is 1877. War breaks out between Russia and the Ottoman Empire. The Kingdom of Romania enters on the Russian side. It declares its independence from the Ottomans in the same year. The film sets out the battlefield scenes of that war. The assault on Rahova and the fall of Plevna reach the screen. The preparation and the crossing of the army are shown in detail. A large body of extras fills the battlefield. Nicolaescu builds the scenes in wide shots. Filming began in the summer of 1977. It was completed in fifty nine days. The production also carries scenes from a television series on the same subject. The account puts the question of independence at its centre. Statesmen of the period appear on screen as well. Mircea Albulescu and Ilarion Ciobanu appear in the one hundred ninety two minute film, a Romanian production Sergiu Nicolaescu finished in 1977.
