What A Police Inspector Calls Is About
In November 1940 the far right Iron Guard movement, having come to power in Romania, begins a campaign of retaliation against its political enemies. On the night of the twenty sixth and twenty seventh of November forty political prisoners are killed in Jilava prison; the next day the former minister Virgil Madgearu and the historian Nicolae Iorga are shot as well. Wanting to smother the outcry, the prefect of police hands the case to Tudor Moldovan, an inspector from the vice division, in the hope that he will get nowhere. But the man does not let it go. The film was made in 1974 inside a state cinema that told these events within its own political frame, and it is worth watching with that frame in mind. Sergiu Nicolaescu’s hundred and fourteen minute Romanian film was completed in 1974.
