What The Last Assault Is About
On 23 August 1944 Romania changed sides and began fighting alongside the Allies against the German army, and the film is set in the months that followed. Horia Lazăr, an inexperienced but eager young officer, is given command of the unit at the very front; the fighting that begins in Transylvania reaches Hungary and then Czechoslovakia and goes on through the winter. The account shows not the victory but the people inside the unit and the price of every advance. Sergiu Nicolaescu also appears in his own hundred and fifty six minute Romanian film, with Mircea Albulescu, Ștefan Iordache and Ion Besoiu in the cast. It was completed in 1985 and is one of the large scale Romanian war films of the period.
