What With Clean Hands Is About
In Bucharest after the Second World War, a police commissar with no interest in politics goes after the gangs holding the city, and does it by methods not found in the book. The film is built as a crime picture, but behind it stands the darkness of a period in which power was changing hands: who is police, who is gangster and who is both is not always clear. Sergiu Nicolaescu directed and played Commissar Miclovan; beside him Ilarion Ciobanu plays Commissar Roman, and the methods of the two men are nothing alike. Gheorghe Dinică is also in the cast. It became one of the most watched Romanian films and grew into a series through its sequels. It runs ninety-five minutes and dates from 1972. The record’s summary is a single sentence and never mentions the period in which it is set.
