What Clans of Intrigue Is About
Chu Liuxiang is drinking with his friend the monk Wuhua when Gong Nanyan of the Holy Water Palace appears and accuses him of stealing the palace’s holy water and of a string of murders. She gives him a month to clear his name, or the mistress of the palace will kill him. Out of curiosity as much as to prove his innocence, Chu sets about investigating. Chor Yuen’s Shaw Brothers production was adapted from a novel in Gu Long’s Chu Liuxiang series, with Ti Lung in the lead. The film leans on story and character rather than on fighting; the weight is on solving three separate murder cases. Chu Liuxiang is a figure who robs the rich for the poor, is known for not killing his enemies and carries only a metal fan for defence.
