What Employees' Entrance Is About
Kurt Anderson, manager of a New York department store in financial trouble, will do anything to protect his position: he puts an employee of twenty years out the door in a minute and has no qualms about using his power over the women who work for him. Madeline, a young woman looking for work, walks into that arrangement; Anderson hires her, but they spend a night together first. Madeline then falls for Martin, one of the store's rising men, and lives in fear of that night coming out. Roy Del Ruth's film is one of the hardest examples of the pre-Code period; what the boss does is neither romanticised nor punished, only shown as part of a system that works. Warren William's manager is still uncomfortable to watch. The film was added to the National Film Registry in 2019.
