What Handymen, Handymen Is About
The teachers of a primary school prepare a retirement party for the cleaning woman who has worked there for years. As the night goes on, every relationship inside the school comes to the surface: who expects what from whom, who owes whom, and how thin the paper is that the headmaster’s authority rests on. The party begins as a celebration, turns into a reckoning, and in the end nobody is left as they came. Goran Marković’s eighty three minute Yugoslav film looks at the society of its time through one school and never softens its humour. It was shot in eighteen days, took its title from a poem by Aleksandar Sekulić and was completed in 1980; the music is by Zoran Simjanović.
